Beyond the debate over the study's findings, the case raised a broader regional question: what happens when illegal economies generate pollutants that enter the water systems communities depend on?
Cocaine production involves a range of chemical substances and generates waste that can enter the environment when it is not properly managed. In areas where clandestine laboratories operate near water sources, the environmental impact can extend well beyond the locations directly associated with criminal activity.
The issue is particularly challenging because drug trafficking-related contamination can occur in rural areas where environmental monitoring systems have limited capacity. Waste can enter waterways and move through watersheds while communities continue using those sources for drinking water, agriculture and other economic activities.
This makes pollution associated with drug production a problem that cuts across security, public health and environmental protection. The impact of an illegal economy does not necessarily end when a police operation dismantles a clandestine laboratory. Chemical residues can remain in the environment, requiring detection, monitoring and treatment.
The challenge is compounded by the fact that many water treatment facilities were designed to address conventional pollutants. The emergence of substances linked to clandestine industrial activities creates a need to expand monitoring systems and strengthen laboratory capacity to detect compounds at very low concentrations.
Detecting a substance, however, does not necessarily mean that there is an immediate risk to the population. Concentration levels, exposure time and the treatment capacity of water systems are critical factors in determining potential health effects.
In Colombia, the Bogotá Water and Sewerage Company (EAAB) has stated that it maintains monitoring protocols to ensure that distributed water remains safe for human consumption. The District Health Secretariat, through its SaluData Observatory, also reports that water quality parameters remain within the established safety range for drinking water.
These controls highlight the importance of having systems capable not only of detecting new substances, but also of determining whether they pose an actual risk and what response may be required.

The Colombian case is relevant to Latin America because illicit drug production often takes place in territories that cross national borders and share watersheds. Environmental damage originating in one location can ultimately affect communities downstream. Pollution associated with cocaine production also adds to pressures already affecting the region's water systems, including urban growth, agricultural expansion, illegal mining and the effects of climate change.
The World Health Organization has established universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water as a global goal. Meeting that objective requires systems capable of identifying and managing risks that evolve over time, including those arising from emerging sources of contamination.
The Pan American Health Organization warns that without significant additional efforts, more than 132.7 million people across the Americas could lack access to safely managed water services by 2030. The challenge is particularly complex in areas where institutions must address infrastructure gaps, pollution and the presence of illegal economies at the same time.
Water security therefore requires a broader approach. Protecting treatment facilities and expanding distribution networks is not enough. Authorities must also identify the activities contaminating water sources before their effects reach communities.
The environmental impact of drug trafficking increasingly highlights the connection between combating illegal economies and protecting natural resources. Dismantling clandestine laboratories, controlling the handling of chemical substances and monitoring water sources can form part of the same broader strategy for protecting vulnerable territories.
An effective response also requires cooperation across borders. Watersheds do not follow political boundaries, and criminal networks do not necessarily operate within a single jurisdiction. Sharing scientific information, strengthening laboratory capabilities, improving monitoring systems and developing common protocols can help identify pollutants before they become public health concerns.
The challenge for Latin America will be adapting its water systems to an increasingly complex environmental reality. Climate change, urban expansion and economic activity are already placing growing pressure on vulnerable water sources. Pollution linked to illegal economies adds another layer, as these activities can take place far from urban centers while their environmental impacts travel downstream to communities.
The Colombian case demonstrates that water security also depends on understanding what happens in the areas where pollutants originate. Protecting a river, stream or drinking water source requires knowing which activities are taking place throughout its watershed and anticipating the risks that could affect water quality.
Behind every glass of water lies a monitoring and protection chain that begins long before the resource reaches people's homes. In a region where drug trafficking continues to transform territories and generate environmental impacts, ensuring safe water requires strengthening that chain at its source. Protecting water resources is therefore a shared responsibility involving environmental authorities, public health institutions, utilities and security agencies, because pollution can ultimately reach communities far beyond where it began.
